Did the northern lights appear in Birmingham?

Looking out my window this afternoon I had a small shock. I was seeing “bright lights in the sky” but not of aliens but something that looked like the northern lights.

Here? The aurora borealis in Brum? Surely it’s too low in latitude and yet there they were.


Those colorful sheets of light above the clouds stood high up in the sky for about an hour at sunset. They clearly out-shined the clouds meaning a high altitude event and didn’t seem to follow the wind.

I went online and eventually (sadly) found this:

These nacreous clouds are apparently a rare sight, especially at low latitudes. The brightness comes from the fact that they’re very high, 25km altitude where the sun still shines.
